JD's Contraversial Topic of the day

so is this true or just a poor excuse for women not looking after themselves?

Living with men 'makes women fat'

Women tend to fall into bad eating habits and put on weight when they live with men, a study has claimed.

However, men seem to become healthier and eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat after they begin co-habiting with their partners, according to dieticians from Newcastle University.

In a review of seven previous studies the Newcastle team found women's diets increased in fat and sugar and they tended to start eating creamier, heavier dishes like rich pasta dishes and curries.

The dieticians suggested this happened because couples tried to please each other by changing their diets.

One of the studies suggested men naturally preferred a high-fat diet whereas women tended to choose, healthier, low-fat options. However, this division seemed to blur when people entered into relationships.

One of the studies, which involved 9,043 US adults, found marriage itself was the cause of weight gain in women - when women left their marriages they lost weight.

The authors said this could happen because married women had less time to exercise and watch their eating habits.

Study author Dr Amelia Lake said: "You can't just blame an unhealthy lifestyle or diet on your partner, as there are many other things that affect what you eat and do. However, research has shown that your partner is a strong influence on lifestyle and people who are trying to live healthier lives should take this factor into consideration.

"Couples who move into together should use the opportunity of the honeymoon period to make positive changes to their diet and lifestyle by working together and supporting each other.

"But couples who have been in their relationships for longer should remember that it is never too late to make changes and again this needs team work."
